COMPOSITE (WHITE) FILLING
Composite why?
It is a plastic mixture with silicon dioxide particles in it. They are defined as white fillings because they are tooth-colored. Although they were used only in the anterior teeth in the 1960s, with the advanced development of the material, they can be successfully applied to the posterior teeth as a filling material that is resistant to chewing pressures and wears less.
Composite filling material consists of a combination of different materials. It can be shaped into plastic and hardens with ultraviolet (UV) light. This is the reason why it is called beam filling among the people. It is a filling material that is routinely applied in our clinic and in developed countries. The aesthetic success it provides, especially in anterior teeth, is not discussed.
Advantages
With the recently developed composite fillings, teeth that could only remain in the mouth with porcelain veneer and maintain their integrity can now display an extremely aesthetic appearance without the need for veneer.
It can be done in a single session.
Since there is no need to remove too much material from the tooth before the filling is placed (because these fillings are chemically attached to the tooth), they do not cause loss of tooth hard tissue.
Even very small cavities can be closed.

Disadvantages
It should never be suitable for caries at or below the gingival level, In cases where it is not applied well, there is a gap between the tooth and the filling due to the shrinkage of the filling while it hardens, and bacteria penetrate through this gap, causing secondary caries.
If one of the walls of the tooth is broken in the back teeth or if there is a lot of material loss in the tooth, it may not resist the chewing forces.
Warnings to patients after composite restorations
Polishing can now be done in the same session on composites. However, in very large restorations or serial restorations made for multiple teeth, it will be much better to call the patient for a check-up once again and make the necessary corrections, if any, both in terms of aesthetics and function.
With these materials, very large losses in the anterior teeth can be restored, so it should be explained that patients' being careful about biting will prolong the life of these restorations. What should be paid more attention to the teeth that have been removed is to recommend toothbrushes that are not too hard to the patient and to enable them to make corrections in brushing methods. These recommendations are also valid for wide facial restorations.
